For the second time since 2016, the BOGE Rubber & Plastics Group presents itself at the International Suppliers Fair (IZB), which takes place under the motto “Think Digital” in Wolfsburg from 16 to 18 October 2018. 830 companies from 34 countries exhibit their products at the IZB. 117 novelties, of which 38 world premieres, will be presented. A world premiere comes from BOGE, the additive manufacturing process for endless fibers, which is used to mass-produce the safety component "brake pedal":
Innovative lightweight technology enables volume production, is affordable and hybrid. That’s why the BOGE Rubber & Plastics Group has developed an additive manufacturing process for endless fiber materials. It is applied to brake pedals, a security critical component – 40-55 percent lighter than steel, fully automated and quality controlled.
Core of the process is the local adaption of fiber architectures by printing unidirectional reinforcements (UD-Tapes) to organo-sheets. In a second step these tailored blanks are then draped and consolidated in a way, that fully welds the tapes to the organo-sheets. This makes mechanical properties of endless fiber-shells programmable. Increased fiber efficiency reduces the amount of equipped endless fiber materials by 30 percent, reducing wall thickness and thus weight and cycle time.

The automotive supplier BOGE Rubber & Plastics achieved the highest sales in the company's history in the 2017 financial year. It grew by 8.6 percent to 829.2 million euros. Adjusted for exchange-rate effects, sales growth even amounted to 9.7%. On the one hand, growth was driven by the good order situation across all product lines, a large number of product launches, and disproportionate growth in China.
With the new plant in Mexico and the second plant in China, the supplier of vibration control and plastics solutions continued its international expansion course in 2017.
In addition to this strategic portfolio expansion in the field of vibration technology, new product areas in the product line plastics support the expansion strategy. Lightweight components are increasingly applied in new vehicle design applications, in which the BOGE Rubber & Plastics Group participates disproportionately.
To consolidate its position as a leader in technology and innovation, the BOGE Rubber & Plastics Group invested more than EUR 50.7 million in the 2017 financial year - more than five percent of total sales. With an investment volume of EUR 19.1 million, Germany ranked first in the 2017 financial year, followed by China (EUR 17.4 million) and Slovakia (EUR 10.8 million). Among the major investment projects at the Damme location were the plastic pedal modules (MQB platform, VW) and at the Simmern (Hunsrück) location, the MLBevo engine mount system for Audi (second generation Modular Longitudinal Toolkit) and the transmission mount for VW (platform MQB, A0). Major investment projects outside of Germany involved various elastomeric chassis mounts for the customer Daimler (platform MFA 2) in Trnava (Slovakia) and the plastic pedal modules for various vehicle models of the Volkswagen Group in Qingpu (China).
Internationalization 2017: New plant in Mexico and second plant in China
Another important step in expanding the global presence was the opening of the plant in Mexico. In San Luis Potosí projects for all product lines in particular in the field of vibration control for chassis and powertrain suspension systems as well as plastic components and modules are realized. Among the first customers are Daimler and the VW Group. In the medium term, around 200 employees will work for BOGE in Mexico.
With "BOGE Rubber & Plastics Zhuzhou Co. Ltd.", BOGE Rubber & Plastics now has a second plant in China. The Automotive Division of the owner Zhuzhou Times New Material Technology Co., Ltd. (TMT) has been integrated into the BOGE Rubber & Plastics Group. The BOGE plant in Zhuzhou focuses on automotive vibration control products and acoustic isolation components. Thus, BOGE has extended its product portfolio by acoustic products (passive insulation materials) for the automotive industry and industrial applications as well as truck chassis modules. Around 200 employees in Zhuzhou mainly produce products for customers in the truck and bus sector.
Western Europe and China are the most important markets
The analysis of sales by region shows that Western Europe remains the most important market for the global supplier of vibration control and plastics solutions in the automotive industry. In 2017, about 50 percent of Group sales were generated in this region, followed by China, already with a share of over 20 percent, Slovakia with around 15 percent and the United States with around 12 percent.
In financial year 2017, BOGE Rubber & Plastics employed an average of 4,183 people (previous year: 3,765 employees). The increase resulted mainly from the new plants in Mexico and China. Most employees are employed in Germany (about 1,800), followed by China (about 1,000), Slovakia (about 900) and the USA (about 250).

BOGE Elastmetall GmbH has qualified for the FAST initiative ("Future Automotive Supply Tracks" initiative) of the Volkswagen Group (VW) in the field of pedal system technology, making it one of the 64 selected strategic partners of the FAST initiative worldwide. Overall, the VW Group has over 40,000 companies in its supplier network. The main reason for this nomination was the extensive development expertise in the field of fiber-reinforced lightweight components using the example of the plastic brake pedal, the high level of competence in the field of process automation and the global presence of the BOGE Group.
The objective of the FAST initiative of the Volkswagen Group is to jointly implement technical innovations even faster than before and to realize vehicle projects even more efficiently and effectively worldwide. The companies qualified for FAST were identified by VW in a systematic selection process based on numerous qualification meetings taking into account their innovative strength, strategic orientation and cooperation capability. At the same time, these companies are characterized by outstanding performance in their respective field of competence. They will be involved in the development of new vehicles sooner than before and thus will be able to incorporate own ideas during the pre-series development of new vehicles. At the same time, as part of globalization strategies, the production networks between Volkswagen and its partners are being more closely aligned in order to create and optimally exploit synergies.

BOGE Elastmetall has been awarded this prestigious regional ‘Innovation Oscar’ from the first time by the Verbund Oldenburger Münsterland. Burkhard Tiemann, head of the plastics product line, accepted the innovation prize, a sculpture of the Markenhausen designer Alfred Bullerman, on 24th November on behalf of the CEO Dr Torsten Bremer. 396 guests, including a nine-member BOGE team, celebrated with the prizewinners at the traditional gala evening for the regional economy at the Cloppenburg town hall.
The laudatory speech for BOGE emphasized that BOGE Elastmetall GmbH had succeeded in developing two innovations at the same time: both a product and a process. The company was said to have released ‘the first high-safety structural component made from plastic in automotive serial production’. The process developed for this has no equal anywhere in the world. The team heaped praise on the creative drive of “helmsman” Dr Torsten Bremer. They were also convinced that the plastic material the company developed, as well as the new process, would find many other applications in car manufacturing and would find its way into the automobile mass market in the future via a more developed production process.
This is the innovation for which BOGE received its prize: BOGE Rubber and Plastics developed a new lightweight brake pedal. It is more than 40 percent lighter than traditional steel brake pedals. The first roughly 1000 pedals were manufactured for the Porsche Spyder sports car. They also have orders for approximately 200,000 pedals per year. Because the components are made from a mix of continuous-fiber and short-glass-fiber reinforced plastic, it is well suited to a growing market share of luxury vehicles.
BOGE Rubber & Plastics has practically reinvented components that until now have only existed in steel: BOGE manufactures the lightweight components from continuous-fiber-reinforced plastic. Organic sheets are used for this (made from continuous-fiber-reinforced plastic that is then overmolded with short-glass-fiber plastic). This reduces the weight of the brake pedals produced using this process - the world's first of their kind - by 40 percent; this also has the advantage of significantly improving ride comfort, which creates added value for the end consumer.
The other characteristics of traditional steel brake pedals, especially their strength and durability, are reproduced in full, while the number of components is reduced by functional integration and paint to protect against corrosion is now redundant. In addition to all this, the plastic brake pedal is one-hundred-percent recyclable.

Plastic brake pedal of the BOGE Rubber & Plastics Group, a global supplier of vibration technology and plastic solutions to the automotive industry, was awarded first place in the Automotive Award in the category "Body Interior" by the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) in Düsseldorf. The safety component is installed in the Porsche Panamera and Bentley Continental. The panel of experts who formed the jury particularly appreciated the fact that the plastic brake weighs about less than half the weight of a comparable steel structure
The entire development of the plastic brake pedal – right from component part and tool design through the all-up process development to component part testing - was in the hands of BOGE Rubber & Plastics. In the structural design of the component parts, BOGE was supported by Bond-Laminates, a subsidiary of LANXESS AG.
The plastic pedals can be manufactured in high quantities at costs comparable to conventional steel brakes, due to the high functional integration of the plastic version and the completely automated production. In addition, the pedal can be produced in an economical one-shot process in a large-scale injection molding cycle.
The brake pedal was designed in two versions, one each for left and right-hand driven vehicles. The fact that drivers brake with their left or right foot had also to be taken into account in the design stage. For this purpose, the load path was optimized according to the different torsional directions. The component part is produced by hybrid molding in a one-shot process in short cycle times suitable for large series.
The SPE Awards are among the most prestigious awards for innovations in the automotive industry and its suppliers. The award has been assigned every one and a half year since 1992. This year's awards were presented in Düsseldorf on 17 October.
